In his elaborate office, Metzner leaned back in his chair and stared at the sky. A bit of a haze today but nothing to match what would come with summer’s advent. The Tennessee River glittered silver and traffic on Chapman Highway crawled along at a slow pace. He puffed on his cigar, waiting on the call from Teddy, telling him he had the girl and asking where to bring her.

He circled around in the chair, picked up the remote and turned on a TV nestled in an antique cabinet. A news brief flashed a teaser about four men found shot and beaten behind a strip mall. One was in serious condition, apparently mauled by an unknown animal. The camera zeroed in on two dark sedans crawling with cops and crime scene techs. Metzner shook his head and bit down on his cigar. He was pissed. For some reason, the Reverend had decided to keep him out of the loop and had gotten to her first. If it hadn’t been for Teddy... But where the hell was Teddy last night and why did it take so long for him to call?

He would learn the answer to that once Teddy got there, which should be any minute. He turned off the TV and threw down the remote. Damn, he was too restless to just sit here and wait. He noticed his cigar had gone out, so lost himself in the sweet ritual of firing up. Once it smoldered to his satisfaction, he leaned forward and jabbed the intercom button. When his secretary answered, he said, “Get in here,” around the stogie in his mouth.

Seconds later, the door opened and she strode into the room. A stripper he had hired away from the club, more talented at wrapping herself around a pole than answering the phone or typing letters. But she was a fine one to look at; tall, close to six feet, towering over Metzner. Her platinum blond hair was thick and long and fell to mid-back. Chocolate-brown eyes made a nice contrast to her blond hair; a combination he had always liked. She wore short skirts and tight sweaters and stiletto heels—the subject of many a wet dream of Metzner’s minions. Wasn’t the brightest bulb in the pack, but then that’s not what he wanted from her.

He noticed with a tug of irritation that she chewed gum. He pushed his chair back from the desk and spread his legs. “I need to relax. Get over here and help me out.”

Her face remained a blank slate as she sidled closer, took the gum out of her mouth, and pressed it onto the top of the desk. She fell to her knees, and with a whisper of a sigh reached forward and unzipped his trousers. Finished, she wiped her mouth with her hand, picked up the gum, and popped it back in her mouth. She left the office without a word spoken between them.

Thirty minutes later, Metzner buzzed his secretary and instructed her to call his driver, have him bring the car around.
